This project was from my first typography course where we had the opportunity to create a specimen on an assigned typeface. Calluna is a slab serif text family designed by Jos Buivenga. It is the result of 1.5 years of work to develop a serious text family shaped with a flow between the serif and stem. The typeface was created more or less by accident; Buivenga was playing around with his typeface Museo to see if a slab serif would be an interesting change. The first thing he did was add slab serifs on the stems of Museo and he noticed the serifs added a nice direction. He used this direction to shape the characters: he thought that maybe it could help the eyes to move easier in the direction in which one reads. His goal was to create a rather serious text face. There are 8 fonts in the Calluna family: Light, Regular, Italic, Semibold, Semibold Italic, Bold, Bold Italic and Black.
